Frequently Asked Questions
What is compulsive eating?
A compulsion is an irresistible urge to do an irrational act.  If you stuff yourself to try and satisfy an emotion such as lonliness or anger, and are overweight as a consequence, then you are a compulsive eater.

For more information, take the Am I a Compulsive Eater? quiz.

What is the purpose of CEA-HOW?
Our primary purpose is to abstain from compulsive eating and to carry the message of recovery to those who still suffer.

Does it cost me anything to join CEA-HOW?
There are no dues or fees for members.

What is Compulsive Eaters Anonymous-HOW?
The letters H.O.W. stand for honesty, openmindedness and willingness.  We are a 12 step group recovering from compulsive eating.  We use Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book and 12 Steps and 12 Traditions as tools of examination and release.  When we substitute the words compulsive eater for alcoholic and food for alcohol, we feel we identify absolutely.

What is the difference between CEA-HOW and other 12 step food programs?
CEA-HOW offers a disciplined and structured approach to those of use whose compulsion has reached a critical level.  The CEA-HOW steps, traditions, and tools of recovery are not suggested, rather we accept them as requirements for our recovery.

What happens at meetings?
At every meeting, you will hear members share their experience, strength, and hope.  You will hear how members have used the tools of the program and the 12 steps to overcome life's difficulties and stay out of the food.  Sponsors will introduce themselves and qualify as to the length of their abstinence and weight loss.  As a newcomer, you can come as you are, sit, relax, and listen to see if you identify with the things being said.

How do I get started?
Check out the meeting list on this site and make plans to attend.  If you need more information or directions, please contact us.  We will be happy to assist you.
